Big’z Burger Joint – San Antonio, Texas (5.0)

I did it, meatandcheesebetweentwobunslovers, I am going to, after most likely much too long, graduate from Texas State University! GO BOBCATS! Moving on, to celebrate this moment I headed to Bigz Burger Joint right off of 1604 and Huebner here in San Antonio, Texas. This burger barn on the side of the way arouses mouth juices from the parking lot. There’s an aroma of tasty that made me want to run to the door.

At Bigz the patties are a ½ lb, which is decently sized. And the cheeses offered are American, Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Swiss, and Blue Cheese. Certain toppings cost extra like beer braised onions, avocado, pineapple, etc. I went for a single knowing it’d be filling. I went with American cheese because I was feeling pretty classic, until I saw that you can “Make it Dirty,” and then I did! At Bigz Burger Joint “making it dirty” means they’ll fry an egg and slap that sexy baby on your burger. Who could say no to that?

Sipping on my Dr. Pepper I enjoyed the barnesque décor and fair-like seating. There’s outdoor seating available during permitting weather and what seemed to be a pretty rad Party Barn as well as a small basketball court. This place seemed to be on the up and up. Then I got my burger, after I accidentally tried to steal this guy Clayton’s burger (sorry! and thanks for being cool about it), and things got juicy. And disappointing. Bigz does toast their buns, offer some fresh vegetable toppings, and fry a pretty mean egg. Bigz does NOT seem to season their patty much. Everything around the area was pretty swell, but the main act was pretty lame. Soooooo, what’s that about Bigz? Although, I did hear the Applewood Bacon is pretty tasty and “making it dirty” is only an extra dollar, I’m gonna need some burger seasoning on my meat (that’s what he said?)

Do I recommend Bigz, meh. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the pricing is pretty pretty decent, but it was pretty cold in that huge space. It’s not my favorite and I probably won’t be back for awhile, I’ll just try and “make it dirty” elsewhere. EAT IT if you must, sigh.

Red Robin Bleu Ribbon Burger

Although Red Robin will receive points for creativity those points are immediately deducted for over compensation and exorbitant flavors. What’s the deal Red Robin? The meat isn’t bad either. It just seems like the cook likes to get carried away and while it’s delightful to read (A juicy burger basted with a tangy steak sauce and topped with crumbled Bleu cheese. Served with onion straws, lettuce, tomatoes and zesty Chipotle mayo on an onion bun) and to see (smiling burgers?) the burger materialized is overwhelming and not worth the nine bucks you shoveled out for it. I ordered the Bleu Ribbon burger and found that every bite had way too much bleu cheese, and that’s a potent flavor to be bombarded with! When served, the burger had too much lettuce, that’s another one of their things. It’s supposed to help make the burger smile at you, but besides being visually appealing it just makes me feel like a rabbit not a meat-eating-burger-devourer. That zesty chipotle mayo also makes the flavor explosion more hiroshima than rad-party-in-my-mouth-dance-explosion. Really it seems like Red Robin needs to rethink and edit some of their burgers. We’re looking for Americana and not the hyped up 90s version that bought into itself a little too much. The onion bun, the bleu cheese, zesty chipotle mayo, lettuce, all the spectacle made me miss my favorite part: the onion straws. A delicious and brilliant addition to the burger, it’s nestled under the patty and between the bottom bun making it easy to be overshadowed by all the razzle dazzle. Tis a pity. Under all that I saw the sad meat patty wishing it was a part of a simpler and more tasty ensemble instead of trying to pull together the flavor disaster we we’re both victim to. SAD.

 Red Robin tries hard to maintain the family atmosphere which is nice but also makes it hard for non-children having patrons to get it. The bar is slightly segregated which does make you feel weird about ordering an alcohol beverage from the “funtender” or “mixologists.” Are we all adults here Red Robin? Maybe not, but don’t patronize me for being over twenty one and wanting to get tipsy in this sadly contrived atmosphere. The walls are decked with portraits that are sometimes packed with forced meaning (James Dean, the Classic Marilyn in the white dress, Sinatra, blah da blah). Alas, maybe i would have loved the place…if i could have loved the burger.

Better Off Dead

Thought I was dead didn’tcha. So did I. But Van Halen riffs call me. John Cusack would be the amazing actor to daydream in his lowely fast food job a Frankensteinian 10 lb patty picking up a guitar and SHREDDING. Better Off Dead or better of swallowing that 10 pounder whole? A confession would be that the cheeseburger dance party excites me in a slightly strange and entirely soft porn/erotic way…I WANT IT (in my mouth)! hahaha. By the by, you can get this awesome soundtrack on vinyl. Hope this gets you through your day burger lovers. Until next time…EAT IT.
