Gordo’s Burgers and Stuff

It was a nice San Marcos day and I knew what was a calling me- a burger. So I headed down to Gordo’s Burger N’ Stuff on Wonderworld Dr. What I can tell you is that I enjoyed the N’ Stuff. The burgers however were a disappointment.

The Queso burger consists of a pleasantly spicy queso, pickles, onions, tomatoes, and mayo. I asked for no onions which went well, however my queso came on the side of the burger. Which is a little understable but also felt as though there’s an assembly line of burger templates waiting under a heater in the back and specialty burgers are accompanied by specialty toppings ON THE SIDE. Put it on there for me, I ordered it and am going to pay you because I was under the impression you would assemble my meal for me. Sorry, but unless it’s done well i do not condone the IKEA model for burgers. The bacon was pretty delicious but other than that the burger was nothing special and unfinished when i left the table. It took a lot to try and get to the fifth bite! Perhaps Gordo’s should rethink their burgers, the chicken fried steak I hear is delicious and the bacon cheese fries we got we’re tasty and I kept going back to them during the meal. If you end up at Gordo’s for a burger unfortunately I say don’t eat it!

Carl’s Jr. – The Guacamole Bacon Six Dollar Burger

January 26th, 2009

My next burger comes from a pretty big chain, Carl’s Jr. Started up in California from a few hot dog stands and crossed fingers the happy little star logo definitely has something to chuckle about. Spreading not just over the country but also over seas, I decided once I saw that giggling star logo show up in San Marcos, Tx I needed to put on my stretch pants and head on over.

Well I can tell you that the charbroiled six dollar guacamole burger fills your stomach pretty alright. Although, being in southern Texas I can be pretty critical on guacamole, and theirs is not too special. The charbroiled meat reminds patrons of Burger King, but the variety in burger toppings and choices makes Carl’s Jr. a little extra special. The meat isn’t a bad quality but does feel like it’s been frozen. Carl’s Jr. is good for the price and the partial table service is strange but nice. If you’re in a hurry and need a burger I say eat it.

Bean Burger Changes Life: Sac N Pac Fills Tanks and Bellies

December 31st, 2008

Our next burger comes from a pretty odd place. I heard through the circuit about a sacnpac that sold burgers. First reaction: “Bet they taste like toilet.” Second reaction: “Barfpukehurlllll.” But my source said I had to let go of my bias. Said the cook loves his life, loves what he’s doing, does it with vigor, which makes the burgers from the sacnpac off rr12 in San Marcos, Tx something special.

So I bit my tongue cause I’d just been taught my own lesson and headed up to see if it was delicious on the grill or the stray cat in the alley seasoned poorly. Turns out the sacnpac has a deal with Centerpoint Station, a restaurant that claims to have some pretty darn good burgers. So I decided to put the little ranchroad diner to the test by ordering a burger I’ve never really been a huge fan of. I enjoy the concept of the burger, i’ve seen my brother and sister order it with enthusiasm, but something about it just didn’t call to me: the bean burger. A burger with refried beans, salsa, and cheese. Something about those beans worried me, it could’ve been a pandora’s box we were opening or yuck refried into yuck. ya never know.

Well, the word on the street was right! My bean burger opened my eyes to how life could be. We can put bean on our burgers! On our patties, in our mouths and in our hearts! Bean might be the brown ranch dressing. I devoured my burger and knew: I’d need to come back, I’d need to live again. The burgers were cheap and delicious and on the way out we filled up the gas tank. thank you! Served on a sourdough bun with delicious fries this was one of my better gas station visits. So i think you know what to do, eat it sucka’.

Cheeseburger Pringles

September 20th, 2008

Cheeseburger Pringles. There it is. Finally Pringles has decided to acknowledge the cheeseburger loving community after Pizza Pringles have been around for who knows how long. Although I wasn’t able to locate the Cheeseburger Pringles anywhere on the site I did find a nice tennis ball container full of them at the Walmart in San Marcos and couldn’t pass up the temptation. And did they fulfill my cheeseburger dreams? Sort of…? It’s a little too brilliant at times, I can taste small bursts of mustard and onion on my cheddar burger. There’s also a continuous tinge of the flavor of the grill. However, the cheddar powder is overwhelming and often takes over the pringle leaving it to taste like just a cheddar flavored pringle. Perhaps using a less abrasive cheese like American would clear up that problem and open room up on the chip for ketchup, which I never tasted on the Pringles. Also, if you don’t like onions or mustard on your cheeseburger than you’re S O L here. Perhaps rethinking the Cheeseburger Pringle or even creating different cheeseburger flavors like bbq cheeseburger would help out. I can’t help but feel like Pringles didn’t really consider the full spectrum of the cheeseburger loving community. Try them out and let me know what you think. I want to say thanks to Pringles but I’m going to need a new revised and more thought out Cheeseburger Pringle to get the restaurant cravers experience. These Pringles are limited time only so you better go grab a tube and try them out at least. I dip em in guacamole and bbq sauce when i’m feeling extra tubby.

Whataburger- San Marcos; Exit 200

May 5th, 2008

Whataburger is a regional chain in the south that boasts there are 36,834 different ways that they are prepared to fix your burger. They’ll add bacon, two slices of cheese, pickles, etc etc. This may just be an urban legend but supposedly you can get chicken, bacon, and two patties wedged in between those five inch buns. I have no evidence and it sounds too crazy to attempt. I went for the specialty burger when i went to Whataburger on a nice Texas night. The barbecue cheddar burger was not that special though. Shredded cheddar on top of babecue sauce finished with pickles did give it a brisket feel. But it was almost a feeble attempt at something exciting and new on the menu. Give me an onion ring inbetween those buns and maybe we’ll talk business. Although it was filling it wasn’t anything to write home to mom about. The burgers there often have the feel of going on for miles, which is always a nice challenge to finish. As a kid though I couldn’t stand the place. They have a habit of drenching their burgers in mustard, so if you’re not that kinda’ person, better say, “easy to no mustard buster!” That’ll take care of them good. Most whataburgers are twenty-four hour establishments and they’ve just added breakfast to their menu within the past year. It’s all pretty delicious actually, I just had a bad run in. Make sure to order a shake while you’re ther. They make them pretty thick but sooooooooo GOOD! Here’s the address, I hope to see you there:

Cafe on the Square

February 23rd, 2008

cafe-on-the-square.JPGThe greens were crisp. The patty was a little burnt. The bacon…DRY! The only burger on the Cafe on the Square’s menu was a “build your own” with everything on the side. That’ already a signal, effort much? I personally have nothing really against the “build your own” in the sense that it grants you the comfort of being picky with out driving your waitress crazy. “Mayo on the side, easy lettuce, no onions, no mustard, extra pickles…” I’ve been there, it’s not fun. Conversely, if I’m gonna make my own burger why didn’t I just stay at home? What’s the deal here Cafe on the Square? In there defense, burgers don’t seem to be or desire to be the focus of the menu. I’m not demanding a signature end all of end all beta series burger, but if you’re gonna offer something up at least make it worthy of your caliber and my dollar. The service was good and the location on the historic downtown district of San Marcos across from the courthouse does make for a fresh scene. If you find yourself at the ol’ cafe I’d say steer clear of the cheeseburger, save it for a cafe that cares. Alas, as the doublecheeseblogger I shan’t be returning.
